Tuesday 20 April at the Musician in Leicester offers one of the last chances to see the rather lovely Mawkin:Causley before they split in the summer. Nominated as Best Group in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards before they'd released an album, when their debut The Awkward Recruit appeared it in pulled in plaudits from all directions, including of course the now-infamous fRoots cover. Described as "unconditionally mighty" by Mojo and "an inspired alliance" by Time Out this is not to be missed. Providing support is the equally lovely Lucy Ward, making a welcome return after wowing the audience when supporting Jim Moray last year. A finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk competition in 2009, she has since gone on to support the likes of Seth Lakeman and is booked for a string of folk festivals this summer, including Big Session, Shrewsbury and Broadstairs. Still only twenty, her feisty on-stage presence and powerfully haunting voice leaves the audience hushed, whether performing traditional or original material. Tickets are £11 from wegottickets or The Musician. Doors open at 8pm with music starting at 8.30pm. http://www.greenbirdpromotions.com
