Israel isn't in Europe either. Ironically, though the UK came last, the winning German song was deliberately tailored to sound like contemporary British pop (Lily Allen etc). So British pop is popular as long as Brits don't sing it! (To be fair, the Brit entry was also about 25 years behind the times, sounding very 1980s.)
