Probably named in honor of Catalpa Jones, a San Francisco ecdysiast. She may have been "soft-wood", but her suitors... (Yes, I'm making this up.) Too late. It's now officially part of folklore. Before the year is out someone, somewhere, will write "The Ballad of Catalpa Jones". Anyway, I'm really just posting to thank everyone for their helpful answers to my original question.
