In Sandburg, 1927, The American Songbag, a note says it is a fragment of a spiritual heard in Texas in the early 1880s by Charley Thorpe of Santa Fe. Only the one verse.

BY'M BY

1
By'm by, by'm by,
Stahs shinin',
Numbah, numbah one,
Numbah two, numbah three,
Good Lawd, by'm by, by'm by,
Good Lawd, by'm by.

Not related to the well-known spiritual, By and By.
