Folk music becomes popular when it speaks to the people of the upcoming generation. It did in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It kind of did in the 80s and 90s. The Unthanks look like young people do today, or at least a lot of young people do, and for that reason they open doors to the tradition. Youngsters relate to them. My personal feeling is the arrangements detract from the stark beauty of their singing, but I doubt the music is aimed at me. If they make a few bob along the way good luck to them.
