Water in a mine is one of the most difficult things to deal with, and when it's been there a while it can become quite acidic. Some pits are known as "wet" pits, and it sounds like this may have been one, if it was so close to water. There are rules about the proximity of working to water-bearing strata...must have been some unaccounted for water source, maybe.. |
