When I was a kid, 60 or so years ago, townspeople and businesses got two deliveries of mail a day. We didn't- we were out in the country.

Here in Juneau, Alaska, their number is in the book and we can phone the post office, although it goes to the post office in the 'valley' not the one downtown. A human being answers, usually the manager.
