If you want to lay the blame on anyone in particular, my finger would be pointing at Pat Jennings (Spurs & Arsenal, '60s-'80s). He's the man who made the foot block a standard goalkeeping technique. He was a big chap – maybe he had problems getting down to low shots quickly enough. Something else that's common practice with goalkeepers today that was rare in my playing days ('60s-70s): if a goalkeeper goes for a shot high to his right, he'll beat it out with his left hand rather than his right (and vice versa for shots to the left), even though the right hand has to cover more space to reach the ball. What's the rationale behind that?
