"Colonel Bogey" was a famous marching tune played by military bands. I think it was one of the tunes whistled by the troops in the film "Bridge over the River Kwai (sp)". The troops often composed words to marching tunes, mostly derogatory of the enemy or authority, and sang them as they marched along. Hence the variations in the words, but the common theme.
