So what would EM have thought about Chekov (hope i spelled this correctly) - would he approved of a Russian steering the ship even if he got his commands from Shatner?

Or would he have seen it as a symbol of the working class (Chekov) forever oppressed by the clergy (Shatners role name was "James Tiberius Kirk", "kirk" being used in EM`s native Scotland as a synonym for church, "James" as a possible reference to the catholic Jacobites and "Tiberius" a reference to the river Tiber running through Rome)?
