@Declan "A hod is a container for bricks used on a building site, and in this instance is a metaphor for the building (construction) industry." Or a Coal hod for carrying coal (which is probably more appropriate in this instance) as he's describing his father's experiences down the pit. Great song, though. Probably his best self-penned effort.
