A friend of mine who's dad flew in the Battle of Britain said that when they heard the "Never in the field of human conflict" speech they though and were hoping that he was talking about their pay.

But undeniably inspirational - and at the time that is what was required in spades - I could not care whether you loved the man or loathed him the reality was that Churchill delivered, no other figure in British politics at that time could have done so, so credibly.
