When I was growing up in the 1960s we had some Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Odetta albums in the house that I quite liked alongside the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, Lovin' Spoonful, etc. When I got to McGill University in 1974 there was one folk coffee house, the Yellow Door, just east of the campus, and another, the Golem, just west of the campus. The Golem, in particular, had one great act after another: Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Jesse Winchester, Bruce Murdoch, Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrels, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk, Erik Frandsen, Mary McCaslin & Jim Ringer, Bodie Wagner, Jay Ungar & Lyn Hardy, Ronney Abramson, Tex Konig, Sneezy Waters, and so many more. Seeing all those people live, week after week, is what got me hooked on folk music.
