Ross Campbell Tech: Apple Security Update - Strange? (6) RE: Tech: Apple Security Update - Strange? 31 Jul 12

I abandoned Safari in favour of Firefox sometime back when Safari started refusing to load my email service. Discovered later that an upgrade to OS 10.4 and corresponding Safari version would have solved the problem. Currently still using Power PC Macs, so all this new stuff is rather academic. My attempt at future-proofing was to buy an Intel-powered Mac Mini, but even that, with Snow Leopard OS 10.6, is verging on the obsolete as far as Apple is concerned.

framus - there have been (so far) four different iMac processors -the G3 iMac is an all-in-one CRT box with multi-coloured body, the G4 iMac is the dome-shaped body with anglepoise screen, The G5 and Intel models look like a simple monitor screen, all the computer gubbins is contained in the frame behind. More important as far as learning how to use your machine is knowing what operating system you have. This determines what other software your computer will run. If you click on the Apple symbol at top left of your screen, then click "About this Mac", you will see information on what type of machine you have, what OS is loaded and details of processor speed and memory. Clicking "More info" will list the various technical specifications of your computer's components.

When you've figured out what operating system you have, I would recommend acquiring the appropriate version of one of the Mac "Bibles". The documentation included with computers is less than useless and the Apple "Help" screens are designed in such an arcane way that it is incredibly difficult to find out how to do what you want. I have found the "Missing Manual" series very useful, the "*** for Dummies" series probably as good, and there are others. I have found the ones I needed on eBay or Bookfinder.com from about £3 (They're about ten times that new!)

PM me if there's anything specific I could help you with.

Ross
