JohnInKansas - re Gallon glass jugs - something like this? http://www.dorsethomebrew.co.uk/shop/36-35-large/1-gallon-clear-glass-demijohn.jpg From about forty years ago, when excise rules in the UK were relaxed, it became legal to brew beer at home for your own use. The practise became widespread. Eventually specialist shops grew to meet the demand for raw materials, equipment, etc. National chain "Boots the Chemist" stocked a wide range of brewing necessities, including the glass demijohns as pictured above. The brewing craze long since passed its peak, but flagons like these crop up regularly at Charity Shops and car boot sales over here for a pound or two (current retail price appears to be £6.95, maybe $10?) Maybe the vogue for micro-breweries in the US pre-empted a similar home-brew industry? Or does the excise situation still prohibit home production of alcohol? Ross
