Newton wrote the words (he wrote a great many "Olney hymns"), but we don't know what tune it was sung to. The one we sing now was put to it relatively recently; you'll have to look it up!
If you're in the UK you can visit the Cowper & Newton museum in Olney, Bucks (between Milton Keynes & Northampton) and Newton's church. William Cowper was the well-known 18th c. poet.
