GUEST,JP Req: The Wild Bunch: Leave Taking Song/Golondrina (12) RE: Lyr Req: The Wild Bunch The Leave Taking Song 27 Aug 12

"La Golondrina" is a Mexican pop song from the 1930's or so, based on a poem written by a Mexican expatriate who was banished to France after supporting Emperor Maximillian on behalf of the French Imperialists against Mexican Nationalists in the 1860's (the Battle of Puebla, from which the holiday "Cinco de Mayo" comes from, was fought during the Mexican people's war for independence from Franco-European domination. The song thus talks about a swallow ("la golondrina") that is unable to fly and struggling to find a home (like the Mexican expatriate banished to France, missing his homeland of Mexico but unable to return). The words from the Wild Bunch version, translated into English, are as follows:

To where will it go to,
frenzied and tired,
the swallow,
that is heading out from here into the unknown,
searching for shelter-
but it won't find it;
oh heavens above,
and unable to fly (the poor bird)!

Next to my bed,
I will set the bird up in its nest,
where God willing,
It will make it through the winter season.
I am also
in the realm of the lost;
oh heavens above,
and unable to fly!
