On the way back from the Paralympics, in a Docklands light railway carriage, i passed canary wharf and looked at the tall impressive buildings with the names on, Barclays, KPMG banks or financial institutions. On the long drive home North I passed derelict workshops and factories, a lot of food storage depots. Back home things are pretty desperate, the building industry is about out on its feet, have you seen the utube vid of crocodiles and hippos packed like sardines in a muddy puddle and antelope trying to take a drink from it, well folks that is what it is like up here. The new initiative of reducing affordable housing requirements are laughable, for a start, and this is not generally known, that if a developer agreed to build 50% social housing on a particular plot of land they got a 100% grant, or were given the land (same thing) and through either naivety, incompetence or fraud were under no obligation to actually start building the houses. Councils have targets to hit for social housing and are unable to borrow money to fund them themselves so have to rely on the developers, the developers, having got their land for free are now using their leverage to reduce the amount of social housing they have to build to increase their profits. What the Uk really needs is to return to making things and that is where the energy and money must be spent. If it doesn't happen we shall end up with a deeply divided society and a wall will have to be built to keep the riff raff out I think it might run parallel on a line just south of Peterborough any other suggestions
