Oh, quite right - Jim Dixon's original is affectionate and does have that "insider" feeling. I hope you like The Landlord's Friend. Great book! You might also like Leadbeater's Ballitore Journals, which are diaries going right through 1798, when she had neighbours lynched outside her door by Yeomen and blunderbuss-toting United Irishmen seeking guns and money in her house. ("Where does your daddy keep his money?" they asked the children; the five-year-old said she didn't know, the three-year-old said "In his britches pocket!")
