I can think of lots of UK folk clubs that routinely book acts that haven't released albums on the established folk labels, aren't young and good-looking, don't have assertive management, aren't (necessarily) great showmen/women etc. But I do think, Gwilym you'd do better to put together an album and post it, together with press release/biography, to folk clubs. And the folkie media too, while you're stuffing envelopes. There are limits to how many gigs you can get without some kind of demonstrable commitment to the conventions of commercial performance ...
