We (The New Deal String Band, = Tom Paley, Janet Kerr, myself) recorded it on our first album Down In The Willow. We had difficulty with the lyrics, and came up with something very similar to the above. I've put our changes in capitals. Joe Locker. They gave him his orders at Bullhead Mountain, Saying, "Brown, you are always behind. It is OFF yourself that you are TAKING. You GET nothing for the loss of time." He jumped on the truck and he pulled down the throttle, Saying, "I'll try and make lost time. It's a mountain road that I have to travel, And it's full of the DANGER SIGNS." It WAS A HIGH RATE THAT he had to travel, THE curves were many and sharp. It was late in the day when he left WADE Valley And he wanted to make it by dark. AT WATERPEAK PASS AT the foot of the mountain. The truck it swerved ALL around. It threw Lonnie out and a timber struck him And he died there upon the ground. COME all other men who RIDE this mountain, Let this be a warning to you. He left his wife and two little children. The next one might be you. TAKE CARE LITTLE MAID and YOUR two little children, To his loving memory be true. Safe in that home beyond all trouble He is waiting for his children and you.
