I'm sure there was as much 'navel-gazing' going on in the sixties as there is now. And as I said before - they didn't all start off being brilliant. But folkclubs gave them a platform for their material to be heard and folkclubs still have a hugely important part to play in moulding and shaping future performers. I've been going to folkclubs for almost 50 years so I think I am qualified to comment.
