I think there's something wrong with thinking that this is a hokey "Sons of the Pioneers"-type song. G-bless them...BUT, this was sung as a serious piece by none other than Paul Robeson, which is where many of us learned it. Obviously, in his capable hands (voice) it had a much different feel and message to it. Please listen to that recording if you can!
