You can hear some clips from one of my FAVE (a capella) singing sessions here and here and here.

(The first and second links will allow you to see our glamorous recording studio, complete with high-tech soundproofing... and - if you look/listen closely - you might even manage to figure out which singers are me and fellow Sheffield 'Catters @sirovedout and Drug Crazed...)

If you like the sound, and think you might like it enough to buy a CD of it (or maybe even enough to help fund the project to make a CD of more of it) then check out this link: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/kelham-island-voices-folk-singing-cd?c=home

Cards on the table, I'm a regular participant in this session, and am one of many people participating in the recording. It's possibly my most favourite singing session ever, because of all the glorious harmonies. I'm not the one who thought to make a recording of it, but I definitely like the idea.

A lot of folks (including the singers) are chipping in to make this possible, and doing things like having a ceilidh fund-raiser. And Jenny - our fearless leader - had the bright idea to see if "crowdsourcing" could help us along, so she's posted about it on Indiegogo (last link above); we have 12 days left there.

A lot of you may be wondering, "Why go to all the trouble of recording your singing session?"

At which point, it seems appropriate to quote some of what Jenny's written on the Kelham Island Voices Indiegogo page:
For more than ten years, I have been singing regularly at the Kelham Island Tavern unaccompanied song sessions. Every month, I leave the pub with my ears ringing, wishing that I could take away some of the joyful choruses to listen to on my way home and to share with other people.

Finally, I decided to do something about that. I gathered a group of the regular singers, and we are in the process of recording some of the most popular songs from the session. With your help, we are hoping to release these in CD form, to listen to, to make available to the public, and to preserve something of the unique folk tradition that has evolved here.

Sheffield is becoming increasingly renowned for the quality and vibrancy of its folk scene, both as the base for the many successful performers who have made the area their home, and for local traditions such as the local carols and sword dances. The Kelham Island Tavern singing session has a firm place within this culture, and the CD aims to recognise and celebrate this, as well as introducing it to a wider audience.

And of course, anyone in/near Sheffield on the 4th Sunday evening (8.30-ish) of the month (may or may not include August, and sometimes the December session takes place in early Jan, for obvious reasons) is welcome to come hear and join in the singing themselves! IMHO, it's sublime. (PM me if you need directions.)
