The last thing anyone in the US desires is an entanglement in Syria, whatever delusions may prevail with the uninformed. What in God's name is there to gain? Currently, you have the following elements engaged in the "civil war" there: An oppressive Shia dictatorship, an influx of Saudi Arabian arms for the Sunnis involved, Iranian and Russian support of the Assad government, a genuine struggle for representative government, elements of Al Quaeda attempting to coerce and take advantage of the possible anarchy following a revolution that would allow establishment of a Sharia-ruled state, and Hezbollah convening to prop up rule by the Shias. Essentially it is becoming a proxy war for a collection of disparate interests, most of which have nothing in common with our interests. Obama has been avoiding interference in this maelstrom to the point where it is now almost totally out of control. Anyone who see this as a contrived opportunity by the US government is fundamentally deluded. Our only real interest is in the stabilization of a frigging mess on the borders of Turkey and Jordan, which are basically stable states allies to us.
