First recorded by Burl Ives 17th Feb 1949 and later, the same year, by Vaughn Monroe. Gene Autry sang it in the film, Ghost Riders 1949. Other recordings were by Bing Crosby, Frankie Laine, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Kay Starr, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Slim Whitman, Eddy Arnold, Gene Pitney, Frank Ifield, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy.
