I think it's in the last 20 years that English TV and radio programmes started to pronounce the name Maria Mariya (rhyming with 'Hiya!') Is there evidence from rhymes in folk songs (or possibly music hall, though they tended to use manged rhymes for comic effect, so aren't so reliable) for this pronunciation or for the more normal Latinate one of Mareeya?
