Natural philosophy was a wonderful term and in my opinion helped people as the supposed truisms of Scripture came tumbling down.
Even Newton, very pious and wasted years looking for the ark of the covenant, used the term natural philosophy. I reckon he differentiated between fantasy in the church and reality in his looking glass.
