In 1913, Edith Wharton published something with the phrase "white of you". Eventually, that eveolved into the catch phrase "that's mighty white of you". The statement has Christian conotations with purity of sole being white. Born Edith Newbold Jones, Miss Wharton is also credited with the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses".
