Eliza... the research where the odor issue was noted was not about odor itself, but more serious concerns. It is unfortunate that any animals of any sort are the only way we have to work out how organisms in general function and can be helped.
Over the years, many of the worst lab tests have been reduced or eliminated, and computer programs are modeling the bio-chemical processes to reduce actual testing on animals.

It is also the case that tests ON animals have helped develop drugs & procedures for veterinarians to treat animals.

Quite apart from the slightly amusing discovery about males being a 'problem' in labs, that very knowledge may improve the studies and lessen the impact on test subjects.
