If buying an external drive, consider whether you need it to be powered from laptop/PC (often described as portable). These avoid mains dependency but often require two free USB sockets. Also many DVD/CD writers (usually obsolete models, but sold new on eBay) don't support "CD text," which enables copying and display of track titles, rather than just "track 1" "track 2" etc.
