GUEST,Wireharp Hurdy Gurdy in Ireland? (3) Hurdy Gurdy in Ireland? 23 Jul 14

Hello,

My shiny new hurdy-gurdy arrived yesterday from Altarwinds (George Leverett). It is gorgeous! Now.. I was wondering if anyone out there might have any information regarding hurdies in Ireland. Not playing Irish music on them per se (I know that lots of folks do that), but more along the lines of their use. Were they ever used at fairs, festivals etc. Is there any history of the instrument in Ireland? England's use is documented, if for nothing other than Hogarth's 1734 "Southwark Fair".
I was hoping to be pointed towards similar evidence in the Irish tradition, if there is any. Thanks in advance for any help.
