Leenia, it may be you random maximising of windows is a microsoft "feature" which operates when you move the window to the top or bottom of the screen. If it is you can stop this by clicking - Control Panel>Ease of Access>Make the Mouse Easier to use>Prevent windows from being Automatically Arranged ;   and tick the little box. Microsoft is really good at making the most annoying settings the default.
