I don't quite understand that Ginger and Carrot Top and the like are not meant to be derogatory - surely their use is not meant to be complimentary? I have heard carrot top referred to in an descriptive way but I have never heard it as a nickname. For instance, there is supposedly a performer in the US whose name/nickname/stage name is Carrot Top. I have never heard him perform so I know very little about him- anyway, I was surprised a few years ago the first time I heard of him referred to in that way.
