definitely depends on the style. most of the time my thumb is actually hanging over the top of the fret board a la richie havens but moves to the back of the neck when necessary. some people find it very difficult to get comfortable with the thumb in certain places. and unless you're playing classical guitar, you can afford to have it wherever you feel comfortable.
