In the late 1700s, German romantic nationalist philosopher Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803) suggested to composers and poets that if they wished their work to have a character and style suggestive of a particular nation or people, they should study the volkslieder (folk songs) of the people and strive to emulate their style and character. So folk songs, and the concept thereof, have been around since long before the 1950s. (Just thought some folks here would like to know that....) Don Firth
