My understanding is that there was more-or-less an open border between East and West Berlin until the wall went up in August, 1961. People worked in the West and shopped in the East, because prices in the East were much cheaper. Leeneia, I think all those people crossed the border without food or water and such, because they expected to go back home later the same day. West Berlin was a huge party for days after the Wall fell, and food and drink were available for free. So, why take a rucksack of lower-quality food and drink from the East? -Joe-
