From: GUEST,Fred McCormick - PM Date: 25 Nov 14 - 10:32 AM Wallaby Stew; an allegedly Australian song which A L Lloyd probably cobbled together about a convict who gets thrown in gaol and, when he's released, finds the only food his wife can afford to make is wallaby stew (which is allegedly cheap but awful), so he turns round and goes back to gaol -------------- Fred - Wallaby Stew is definitely an Australian song - Wallaby Stew by Cecil Poole, published in The Bulletin 1897 & these are the words we sing. The reason Dad goes back to jail is the family situation - his wife is expecting the baby of the 'shearer cove', his daughter expecting the baby of a bloke who hasn't 'acted square', & son?/narrator has sold the buggy & maybe the farm! expanded version of 1897 poem from 1933 I'd forgotten this longer version existed. Mark Gregory has been exploring digitised Australian newspapers & finding original/earlier versions of songs & poems & located this Feb 2014. sandra
