Sorry Hi Lo,
I K Brunell was a proposer (& engineer?) of an atomospheric system of railway propulsion. It was tried, I believe, on the line to Paignton. The airtight leather flap could not be made to seal and therefore the vacuum that drew the trains along could not be maintained. The salt spray from the sea made the problem worse.
