I think that "Cross the LINE " is more appropriate , as in crossing the equator ( which I have done several times AND I've got a "Bluenose Certificate" for crossing the Arctic Circle !).

But in any event it's a lovely ,emotional song. One has to have served in a ship for a year or two to understand how one can become so attached to her; I was in aircraft-carrier HMS Eagle from 1966-69 and I STILL miss her today , although I cannot say the same about HMS Centaur, sadly !
