Apparently the Borden family had an odd relative, who butchered animals and carried a hatchet with him.
What I have always suspected is that Borden was doing something he shouldn't and got himself killed because of it. Most of the town's important citizens knew what had happened, and didn't want it getting out. So Lizzie was charged and acquitted.
