And the amazing thing is, they don't seem to realize what they're doing. By the way, gnu, I bet you would enjoy the books of Patrick MacManus. He's interested in many of the same things you are - hunting, fishing, the great outdoors and other manly stuff. He's the one who made the all-too-true observation that camping equipment expands by 50% over the course of a trip. He's from Idaho.
