In Cleveland the first business to do this was called "Flamingo Surprise" mebbe 30 years ago and you might wake up to find a flock of a few dozen plastic pink flamingos all over your yard, and a sign on wheels with a message like "happy birthday"

Variations included a flock of plastic penguins (a nun sent that to our music director for his 50th, much to his disgust, and he threw them over the cliff at Lake Erie. ), teddy bears, & cartoon characters. The idea here is the company comes and retrieve them & the sign after 24 hours. ... so did the gnombs go home?
