The wish to praise something as good and almighty, and the observation that this takes some stretching of logic, seem to be as old as mankind. The problem certainly predates monotheism, and can also be observed in cultures without any (anthropomorphic) deities. For example, Leninism praised the ever victorious Working Class as inevitably bringing forth progress. Ideological Darwinism praises the wisdom of evolution. We must accept this as a psychological a priori. Best we can do is insist that it be separated from science and real politics.
