"Another is to recognize that it is a dream and switch it off" Many would like to do that with waking life. But recognising that it's a dream? I had a dream about that once; I was talking to someone at a party, in a (shared, student) house I knew we had just moved into (in waking life not having been a student for 40 years), with a full memory of the old one and where it was. And we were talking about dreams, and I said that you can tell it's a dream because it has no history, whereas in waking life we have a knowledge of continuity. Upon which I woke up (or did I?)
