@Ray ~ From Dictionary of the Scots Language: "Main coal - so called from its possessing all the good qualities found in any of the other strata in the country. It contains rough coal, splint, and parrot, or jet coal, and is preferred, by the consumers, to all the others, as the most profitable. Kirkby Main makes sense to me. |
