...and of course, there have been attempts from the extreme right to co-opt folk music for their own propaganda. Folk music still hasn't recovered from what Hitler did to it in Germany. The leftists don't seem to use traditional music for propaganda - they write their own songs in the "folk genre." To my mind, that's a more honest way to do it. -Joe-
