I know it's not a folk song, but Mudcat seems good for those half remembered songs from childhood (or in this case parenthood). 45 years ago when I had young children there was a song on Listen with Mother. About a panther who wanted to know what day it was because it was her birthday on Friday. She run through the jungle asking until someone told her. I can only remember snatches and the last verse. Samantha the Panther was having a beautiful dream ...... ...... It's my birthday on Friday, I wonder what day this can be (something about asking a bird who replied ... 'it was ..day I know when I flew over France/ tomorrow is ..day now leave me in peace/ I promised my friends I would meet them in Greece') Samantha the Panther was happy she'd found out at last She felt very tired because she'd been running so fast So after a long drink of milk from a coconut cu-u-up She went back to sleep, it was Saturday when she woke up. I'd forgotten that bird verse until I started typing. My grandchildren now play with the knitted feline called Samantha (which has stripes and spots and a wasp waist from childish hands)
