In the UK, if you apply for a shotgun certificate (licence) you have to tick a box giving the police permission to contact your doctor and ask if the doctor knows of any reason why you should not be given a licence. The idea of this is to reduce the chances of someone with mental health problems getting hold of a shotgun legally. Why can't anyone whose job involves risk to the public, e.g. airline pilots, bus drivers etc, be obliged to give a health professional employed by the airline or civil aviation authority access to their medical records. That way the persons doctor has no conflict of interest, or 'rights issue' because the patient has given their permission for their records to be accessed?
