If the verse with peelers is original , it might place the song after the napoleonic wars but in the "Carlist" civil war in Spain in the 1840s [?], when an unofficial "British" brigade was raised in Britain and Ireland to fight for the previous kings daughter rather than [ the pretender,] Don Carlos, giving emphasis to "fighting the dirty king of spain ".
